Who should elect the President-the popular vote or the Electoral College?

The Electoral College is a complex and often confusing fact of political life in the United States. In short, the Electoral College was written into the Constitution as a compromise between those who wanted only the popular vote (the vote of the people) to elect the President and those who wanted only Congress to elect the President. Each state is given at least 3 electors. Each state is given more electors based on their representation in Congress. For example, Oregon has 2 Senators and 5 Representatives, which means we have 7 electors. In order to win the office, the candidate must receive at least 270 Electoral votes. Now, when people cast their votes for President in the United States they are actually voting for an elector who will represent their vote in the Electoral College. Most states have a "winner-take-all" system whereby the elector who receives the most votes will then get all of that state's electoral votes. For example, whichever candidate the majority of Oregonians vote for will get all 7 of our electoral votes. This is why a candidate may win more votes in the popular vote (because more people voted for him or her) but still lose the election because the Electoral College may award more electoral votes to another candidate. This is what happened in the 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Gore won more popular votes but lost in the Electoral College and therefore lost the election. Some groups appreciate the Electoral College because it allows states with small populations to still have a say in the Presidential election. There have been efforts to reform this system. For example, some groups believe that the people should directly elect the President so the election results would more accurately and consistently reflect what the people want. So, what do you think? Should the Electoral College continue to be used so all states have a say in who is elected or should the President be elected based on the people's vote? Remember, this system of electing the President was written into the Constitution by the Founding Fathers. As always, please use your name when posting a reply so you can actually address one another.

Check this out. Here is a state-based movement to update the electoral college. States can change the way it works so we have a straight popular vote. That way everyone's vote actually matters. See: www.NationalPopularVote.com.

I think that we should have a popular vote so that every ones vote matters

I believe that the popular vote is how we should elect for our next United States President. Electoral vote is like your voting for what someone else wants. Because you are voting for the one that got most voted in your state. I think everyone should be able to have their own opinion. Not only will it make the voting more fair but it may help pick a better President for the next four years. So I think that the popular vote should elect for our next President of the United States.

I think that the popular vote should elect the president. I would like for the popular vote to elect the president because that means everybody will have an equal chance.
Using the Electoral vote doesn’t seem fair to the candidates running for president. It’s just best if everyone’s vote decided on the president that way everything is fair.

I think that we should continue having the Electoral College, because each state has a say in the election and has more of a chance to win on a certain representative. If we had more popular votes it wouldn’t be fair to little towns because their votes wouldn’t matter and they wouldn’t have much say in the election.

I would say I would rather have the popular vote because its more fair for the people of the United States. Electoral vote wouldn’t be fare for the people of the United States. It is because I strongly believe the people run our country, so it would only be fare if they got to pick the president of the United States.

I think that the popular vote is a lot more accurate than the Electoral College. The popular vote makes it so that each and every vote counts. I also think that if there was a popular vote I think that more people would vote.

I think that it would be better to have the popular vote because I think that everyone’s vote matters. And it would be better if the president got chosen by a lot of people not by only a few people. How about the people that wanted to vote what about them.

Anonymous said...

I think the popular vote is more accurate and that way everyone can vote. All votes count and each individual have their own say and opinion. If we call ourselves a free country then we need to everything we can to be a free country and that counts votes too. Votes determine a lot of things. Voting is what gets us where we are. Everyone has the right to put in their say and presidential race is very important. Our president decides a lot about what is going to happen with our country. If only certain people vote how fair does that seem?

I think that we should vote by the most popular vote because then everyone will have their own opinion. By using electro vote it just makes voting a waste because then you don’t even basically have your own opinion.

I think that the popular vote should elect the president. I don’t think we should use the Electoral College. It takes away our opinions and just makes voting a waste of time. The Electoral College is unfair. The bigger states like California get more votes than smaller states. So that’s not right and that’s why I think the popular vote should elect the president.

I think 18 is a good age because voting is a lot to put on a teenagers shoulders. I think that if your are in prison you should be able to vote also because you are supervised and if you aren’t ask to be because it isn’t fair because just because you committed a crime doesn’t that you are bias or prejudice. Illegal immigrants should be able to vote also because they want to be in the U.S.A. and they have jobs and they pay taxes also so they should be able to vote.

Anonymous said...

I think that we should do popular vote because then no one will be mad or go against the government. If they don’t change it to popular vote then I might just go mad and not want to vote. It is annoying that the have made it so hard to vote or so aggravating to vote.

I think that the president should be elected by the popular vote, because he is working for the people. His decision affects all of us, so why shouldn't it be our choice.

Anonymous said...

I think the people should vote and those should be the votes that count. Although I do agree that the people aren’t educated enough, that is something that the schools can work on. I also think that we should change the constitution, even though it is a long process. The excuse that it takes too longs is a lazy excuse. Yes, we won’t have it for this election, but we will for the next.

Anonymous said...

I believe that we need to pick the president by popular vote. This way the people decide who wins and not just a few major important senators and representatives in each state. This would also be way fairer to everyone. It also shows more of who the people of the United States like more. Also there can’t be any big feuds over the voting not being fair because everyone will have their say in it.

Anonymous said...

I think who should elect the president is the Popular vote. It would be wise for the popular vote because it’s based on different people and what they think. They will finally get to have a chance at voting. I don’t think the Electoral College should because it’s not even based on other people, only a few. It’s better for everyone to have a say in what president to vote for to lead our nation.

Anonymous said...

I think that it shouldn’t be up to the congress people or whoever they are to vote who the
next president is. It should be based on what the popular vote is. Yes, the Senators and Representatives have the more say in the election and running the state but the people should have the same rights on the voting then the senators and representatives have. We all have the same rights then everyone here in the United States.

Anonymous said...

I think that popular vote is how they should choose because everyone is being told they should vote, and what’s the point if it’s not going to count anyways.

Anonymous said...

I think that we should choose our president by popular vote. It is more fair because everyone will have an opinion in the election. When it is an electoral vote then not everyone will be able to make their vote count. Electoral voting is like voting for another person that you don’t want. A popular vote is just much more fair for everyone, and I think there are thousands of people that want their voices to be heard as well.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion I think that the people should vote for who is president. Just because the congress is up there in the law business doesn’t mean that the rest of us, Americans, don’t know what’s going on. I think how Oregon does there voting is a good way to vote. I mean if the vote is weighing on someone way more than the other, why not just has everyone vote for them.

I think we should vote that way because that way everyone counts and not only a few people who are already in the congress. If you were to vote for Electoral College it would just be a waste of time because it wouldn’t matter anyways because your vote wouldn’t even count.

I think that we should go with the popular vote. One reason is that we have the right to say what we think, and that includes voting. What’s the point of being able to have a freedom of speech when you can’t even decide for whom you want the president to be for our country? So I think that we should go with that. It makes much more sense for everyone’s vote to count. Don’t you think?

Anonymous said...

I think that everyone should vote as a popular vote. The reason for this is if everyone voted as an electoral vote then it would be like voting for what some one else wants. People have their choice in who they want to become the next president so why not let them decide instead of making other people happy. Everyone is different and have their own ideas on who they vote for to become the next president. Why not let people stand up for what they believe in instead of trying to please everyone around them.

Anonymous said...

I think that we the people should vote as a popular vote. The reason for this being is because everyone will have a say in it. If we where to vote as Electoral College then we are wasting our time and not only that but also voting for wat other people want. The popular vote gives everyone an equal chance. I’m pretty sure that’s wat everyone wants and equal chance to vote.

Anonymous said...

My thought would be to vote for the Electoral College to vote for the president. Some reasons why I think that is because most of the Electoral College system they are mainly trying to eliminate the critics. But also there are mainly public defenders out there. Also the popular vote system are rarely suggesting of electing a minority president but there is one way of electing a minority president which is if the country may have to be divided into three or maybe even more presidential candidates.

Anonymous said...

I think we should elect the president by the popular vote, because you speak who you want the president to be. In the Electoral vote it is like not letting you speak what you want. I think this will make the voting more fair.

Anonymous said...

In the case of the Presidential election I think that Electoral College is the right system of voting. We have voted the representatives into the power to decide, so we should trust them to do what they have been doing for many years. In many other cases though, I believe that popular voting is the right way to go. The voices of many get heard on more issues concerning them and it is more precise on different issues. Overall I believe that we should stick with the way we have things now, and stick with the Electoral College.

Anonymous said...

I think that the Electoral College should elect the president. This way, to me, is fair. This way is a more efficient way of voting and it uses both the government and the people.

I think that we should keep popular vote then everyone can chose which president goes to office. An Electoral College is when one person has the majority of votes in a State then he gets all the votes in that State. The representatives can be trusted but we should vote for ourselves. We should vote for the President, not just get a handful to decide that the person who got the most votes should get all.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the popular vote should be the one that elects our next United States President. Instead of the electoral vote. With electoral vote you can not have your own opinion. You are voting for whatever the state votes the most. So i believe that the popular vote is the way to go.

I think it should be people who should vote. If there saying that electoral college are voting for us that means there lieing to us. They sayed we vote not them. The united states is a country were people get to vote on our president. It even said so.

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote should be the vote that matters most and elects the president, because the whole point in voting is to be heard and make your voice matter. If the vote doesn’t matter and they just go with the electoral vote then why have us vote at all?

Anonymous said...

I think that the president should be voted on by popular votes. That way everyone has a say in who they want to be electes as president. If they use the electoral vote then it is just the congressman voting on who he thinks is the best president and then the votes of the people won't matter. i think everyone's vote should matter.

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote should elect the president because everyone deserves the right to vote if they choose to. And it will be fair for popular voters to have a say in who will be elected as our next president. Also there are more people who get to vote. The Electoral College less people gets to vote, only using their opinions and I think it is unfair.

Anonymous said...

I think that the votes should be equaled out. So that both of the votes count just as much as the other. They should both matter and the electoral votes should not count more than the popular vote. If the electoral votes count more than everyone will think it is not important for them to vote. When really it is very essential for everyone to vote.

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote should be how we elect our presidents. It seems more fair then the electoral vote. The electoral vote is like your voting for what someone else wants, and it is unfair for those who voted for the losing candidate. The popular vote means everyone will have an equal chance.

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote should elect the president because the electoral vote isn’t the most precise way in my opinion. If a candidate wins a state with only 51% of the vote then I feel like 49% of the people are not being heard because their vote is lost in a way. If we used popular vote then everyone would have a chance to be heard and not just by the state.

Anonymous said...

The president is someone that is running this country. Put it in perspective, would you want someone you don’t like running your country? Say that the guy you work with at McDonald’s with you, and he is the kind of guy that is the kind of person you would pummel if you could. He suddenly gets promoted to Manager. Well, I think that we should have our presidents voted in based upon a popular vote, and not through the Electoral College. This would eliminate the problems that ensues some states having more votes then others. The popular vote would give the candidates a better win chance, being that they are the most liked throughout the country. The only drawback I see to a popular vote over the electoral college, is that eventually all it would become a popularity contest, and the issues would just like a carnival attraction, and wouldn’t be as important as they should be.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the president elected should be determined by popular vote. If it were by popular vote then the people in the country would get a better chance to voice their opinion. By electoral vote the president isn't always wanted by the majority but the electors of the state. It's not fair to those who voted for the losing candidate. I think that if you want a better part in deciding who the president is, you should be more in favor of popular voting.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion, I believe that the popular vote should be used to elect the president. What is the point of having the people vote, and a person winning, when the electoral votes may change it? The people have a say in it, but when you vote for one person, but as a state, the votes are for another person, and then your vote literally cancels out. The popular vote should be the only way to vote and elect the president. This way everyone gets a say, the president is the president of the United States, not certain ones. We need to go for popular vote so that the people are actually heard.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the popular vote should be the one to elect the president because that is what the majority of the U.S thinks should be elected. Every vote should count and not just the ones in the higher government with the electoral votes. How fair is it to Oregon when we only have seven electoral votes and California has 60. I don’t think that a president should be elected just off the electoral votes because that is not what the whole nation wants. Who ever has the most popular votes should win the election.

Anonymous said...

I think that we should use the popular vote to elect the president. That way everyone’s vote will mean something, you always hear people saying everyone should vote but if the electoral vote is higher on the other candidate there vote really means nothing. If we elected our president off the popular vote Oregon would be a lot more important, because we only have 7 electors and the candidates don’t really spend much time trying to get our states vote.

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote should be electing the President. The Electoral vote is almost the same thing, because the popular vote pretty much determines the electoral vote. So why not just go off the popular vote. It is more accurate because everyone votes that way. So each individual can have their own say and their own opinion.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion everyone’s opinion should matter. The way the next president should be elected is by popular vote. That way the people would be satisfied because the whole point in voting is to be heard and make your vote matter. If Electoral College is the way the next president is elected then people shouldn’t even bother in voting because most votes won’t even matter.

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote should determine who becomes president. The reason for this is because if one candidate gets most of the popular votes overall, but the other candidate gets the most popular votes in the bigger states they will win the most electoral votes and become the president. If electoral votes are determined by the popular vote in a state then we should just use the popular vote because it is suppose to be our opinion that matters.

Anonymous said...

In my personal opinion, I believe that we should continue having the Electoral College vote for our next president. In many ways, this can eliminate a lot of hassle that can be created by the popular vote system. We were the ones who voted for the representatives for our state, so they, as a representative, should uphold their position and vote the way the majority of the citizens of our state would vote. However, I can see how the popular vote seems more appealing. Don’t we all want a direct say in who our next president will be? Although this sounds like it will work, smaller states will still not get much of a say in the voting process. I feel as if the Electoral College is the fairest and most dependable system of voting.

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote should vote elect the next president because like Eric said it makes everyone’s vote count. The Electoral College is like what is most popular in the state, so it’s not always what you want. I think that if the election was controlled by the popular vote then more people would vote. I really think that some people don’t vote because their vote doesn’t matter. So obviously, it would work better for the U.S. if the president was elected by the popular vote.

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote should elect the president. Why, because we the people are already voting for whom we want as president and that determines who gets that states electoral vote. I think each and every individual should have at least a vote in the next president of the United States. We are a free country and we should be able to vote for who we want in charge of it.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion the way the voting system is set up is not the best way because people don’t always get who they pick. So it is kind of points less to vote if your vote does not matter. The voting should be changed so that the popular vote is used so the people get what they want.

Anonymous said...

In pursuing a very serious career such as president, I feel that all the little things should matter when choosing our county’s leader. As far as voting from state to state I know that the obligations are if you have more votes from that state than your opponents then you win their favor, the insignificant thing about that is some voters might like you and some might not. I feel that all elections should be based on the popular vote because you get more of your votes, and more of the opportunity to win the election.

I’m all for the popular vote, for not only the electoral gets involved, but also the people. Even though some points of views aren’t as clear as others they deserve the right for their opinion to be heard.

I think the popular vote should decide who gets to be the president. The popular vote is would be good because we have been voting the other way for a long time. Also doing this will let younger people vote and for me that is a big deal. If we used the popular vote then people would have a better chance to get who they wanted in office. That is why I think the popular vote would be good.

Anonymous said...

I think that we should use the popular vote. This way everyone that’s of age can vote and they all get a say in who gets voted in. With the popular vote the majority of the people would get who they wanted elected into office. If we used the popular vote then the majority of the people would be happy because they were the ones who voted in the president. Everyone that didn’t get who they wanted voted into office knows that it was a fair vote because everyone voted on who they wanted.

Think the popular vote should be the one to select the new president because every vote counts and in the Electoral College not all votes count. I also think that the president should be elected fairly and have everyone’s vote. Also using the Electoral College is just a waste of time if everyone voted and their vote didn’t count

Anonymous said...

I think we should have a popular vote, because each person has a say in the election. Then people will have their own opinion about the president. If us people get to vote then those votes should count. Then why would we want to vote for a president if they’re not going to count. It is better for everyone to have a say in what president to vote for, to lead the nation.

Anonymous said...

I think that the population vote should count. The reason I think that is because people should make their own decision. If the electoral vote counts than the opinion of the people don’t count. If that’s the case than why do they tell people to vote.

Anonymous said...

I think popular vote is how we should pick our new president. I think that the electoral collage is not right. The electoral collage can get a lot of people mad because not everyone’s vote counts. I think the popular vote will be better because everyone’s vote will count and less people will be mad in our country. So that’s how we should pick our new president of the United States.

Anonymous said...

We don’t need to change the way we vote. We have had minimal problems with voting in the past. Not to mention the electoral collage is a compromise to being with. Some people wanted the popular vote and others wanted just congress to decide who would be the president. So why do we need to mess with anything that satisfied both sides of the debate? My personal philosophy is “If its not causing problems don’t cause any by messing with It.” and the wholly applies to the electoral collage. We should just leave things be.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion popular vote would be the best way to pick our next president. I think that a popular vote would be better because that way everybody gets to vote for their president instead of the size of the state choosing for them. Also popular votes are better because we’re the ones living in the state so all of our votes should count. I don’t think electoral would be fair for the candidates running for president. Also more people would vote if it were the popular vote.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion I think that popular vote is how we should elect our next United States President. Because of this everyone will have an equal chance to vote for whoever they want. We should have to choose who we think should be president not what other people think. If we used the popular vote then the majority of the people would be happy because they were the ones who voted in the president.

I think that the president should be elected based by the peoples vote. I think that because the people are the ones that have to follow those rules that the president chooses to go by. When the voting starts that’s when the people need to really think about before voting because that is a big move to make. It shouldn’t really go by states because some states are way bigger than other states. And that really doesn’t count. The peoples vote really matters.

Anonymous said...

I think that popular voting is fairer than electoral voting because your vote will actually count. We shouldn’t make things more complicated. If we use the electoral collage system not all votes really count.

In my opinion I think that we should choose our president by popular vote. I think that we should do this because the state shouldn't be allowed to choose the president but instead the people of the state. Advertisments always tell people to vote for their future but if we keep this method of electoral voting then it's not pratical to tell people to vote when in reality they're not voting for the president. With electoral voting whoever becomes the president isn't really there based on what the people want but actually based on what the state's thought was best for their people.

I believe that the popular vote is how we should elect for our next United States President. Because I think everyone should be able to have their own opinion. Not only will it make the voting more fair but it may help pick a better President for the next four years. And also because it doesn’t matter if the person your voting does not win. So I think that the popular votes should be the way the government should choose the next President of the United States of America….

I think that we should have a popular vote. This is because I think I our votes should count because we live in the country too. Also I think it is fairer then electoral voting. Everyone gets a fair chance. I feel that electoral voting isn’t very fair to the candidate running for president.

I believe that the candidates that have the most votes from each person gets elected president. To me this is fair because this way it gives each person an opportunity to vote for there own belief. The Electoral vote doesn’t sound fair to me because not all get to vote and this just doesn’t make it fair to everyone.

Anonymous said...

I very strongly believe in the popular vote. It is more fair and every one should have their own opinion that should be seen. I do not understand why the election isn’t all ready ran that way, because everyone talks about how everyone’s opinion should be acknowledged. I am sure sometime in the future that they will end up changing the election to the popular vote. :)

I think we should have popular votes to elect the president. It’s only fair and if each state votes, some peoples votes in that state won’t even matter. If we use Electoral College voting then it wouldn’t be fair to the people.

I think the U.S. should have popular voting because it is only fair to the people. It may be a hassle, but it’s the only fair way.

Anonymous said...

I think we should have popular vote in our country. It doesn’t sound to fair to me to have to cast your vote for which candidate you want, and your state ends up with a percentage that is higher for the opposite candidate and the seven electoral votes go to the candidate that maybe won by one little percent. If everyone got to cast their vote individually then every vote WOULD really count. With the system for voting we have right now, one little vote doesn’t necessarily make a difference. Popular vote means your voice is heard :D

Anonymous said...

In my opinion I think that for the election the popular vote should win. Electoral vote is just congress voting which just makes it stupid. Most states have a winner take all type of thing which I think is just really stupid. I think the congress should not vote for the president the people should vote and the most popular vote should win. The state percentage vote should matter more than the congress because more than 10 people should who to vote for.

Thats whats up

Anonymous said...

It would be better to keep it cause we have the vote.

This year I think that we should do the popular vote just to see how it works out. Also each state should have a say in it. Electoral vote is like voting for someone who else wants because you are voting for the one that got voted most in your state. Also popular voting everyone could have their own opinion. It may not make the voting fair, but it will have a chance of picking our president for the next four years. So I think that the popular vote should elect for our next president of the United States.

I think 18 years old to vote is good because people are more mature and could make good decisions. I also think anybody living in the United sates should get t vote because they live here and they have a right to give there opinion. The electoral college way is just a waist a time.

Ok i think that the winner should be based on all of the votes and not just the electorial vote.

I think it should be based on the popular vote, not the elector college. If it was popular, a lot more people would vote. The smaller states would have a difference, even if it wasn't that much. The President candidates might actually go to every state, instead of the swing states only! GO U.S.A!

I think that everyone should elect but teenageers thats too much to put on us because we have other things to worry about but if we should have a president they should agree with some of the ideas we have and in my opinion i don't think obama or mCcain should be president because their not doing anything that would really help us much

I think the popular vote is more accurate and that way everyone can vote. That way each voter’s vote would count, everyone has their own opinion on different candidates. Some may like a candidate another people may not like that candidate. All in all I really just think it would be a better way of voting.

I also think that it really doesn't matter if obama makes us pay taxes cause were pretty much already paying taxes and it's just dumb!!!!!!!!

I think everyone should make a differense so everyone should vote.

People may get to vote but they are voting for who they think fits the job best. Sometimes though who they think might be right for the job really isn't. Electoral College helps decide who will be the president by looking at their past through politics. Some people aren't the smartest when they vote so this helps them figure it out in a different way. This also shows what most of the state wants so in a way it is popular vote.

In my opinion, the popular vote should elect the president. First of all, everyone should have the right to choose our upcoming president since it is a free country and everyone deserves to input their vote. Electoral College vote does not seem so accurate since it just takes the total votes of each state. Although, the Electoral College does give the opportunities for small states to still have their votes submitted, it may be a more difficult process in many ways. Either way, it also doesn’t matter if the state is small or not, because the votes are what counts overall. Everyone’s votes are important since each individual does have different votes.

I say the popular vote. Why? Because it just sounds better. The popular vote makes it so that every one is responsible for what happens to our world. Not just the people at the electoral college. If a president is elected and our world goes BOOM! Its all our faults.BOOM.

Well, Electoral College, to me, seems to need some reforming. I feel that the people are isolated enough from politics, that we may be ignorant as to what is best. I know I am. I still feel though, that we do not need any representatives for our votes. Just because we live in a certain state, does not mean that we agree with everyone in it.

I think 18 is a good age because voting is a lot to put on a teenager’s shoulders. I think the popular vote is more accurate and that way everyone can vote. Electoral vote isn’t fair for the people of the United States. I also think the people should vote and those should be the votes that count.

I think that choosing a president should based on popular vote and not electoral votes. The only reason to keep electoral votes even going is because it is part of America’s tradition. The plain and simple truth is, if you took the opinion of every person who took the opportunity to vote in the last presidential election, then President Bush would not have won the campaign race. If the population should vote to make a difference, then shouldn’t there direct vote make the decision? Therefore I believe electoral votes should be done away with.

In my opinion, I think that the voting should be based on the people. It’s the people that have to deal with the decisions that the president makes. The people have the right to be heard, the majority of people are going to be mad when the president they chosen didn’t win. Why ask people to vote if their vote won’t count?

Anonymous said...

I think that the popular vote is how we should elect the next president of the United States. What if McCain won the popular vote, but didn’t win the Electoral College vote? Then all of those people who voted for McCain would be mad. They would, probably, think that their opinion didn’t matter. If everyone is being told to vote, then the next president should be chosen by the popular votes.

I believe that the electoral vote is a good idea if our nation just simply cannot decide. Otherwise I believe that the voices of each and every citizen of the United States should be heard through our voting for a leader. I also think that their decisoins as our state representitives are important.

I think all the votes together should decide who the president will be. Electoral college and Popular united!

I think that the popular vote should be the only one that matters. I really dislike the fact that not every state has a say. Everybody says that they do, but that not really true, your vote only matters if you live in a state with money and a big population. I for one think that its rediculous and really needs to be changed.

Anonymous said...

well, i feel the popular vote is better, because everyone gets a say. Go Hermie!

well to my knowledge it doesn't matter if we vote or not. the electoral college does all the voting. so if it changed it would change up the whole system.

this is the best election we have had in a long time.

i think that it should be the popular vote so that everybody gets to vote because its not just the electoral colleges country.

Well since the Electoral College was written into the Constitution when the Senators were still elected by the Legislature, it seems to be the last vestige of a system that didn't trust the people to be informed enough to vote intelligently. Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin took up this issue by making Public Education the law of the land. So now after over 200 years of Public Education I think we can do away with the antiquated idea of the Electoral College.

An election is a decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold formal office. This is the usual mechanism by which modern democracy fills offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations.

The universal acceptance of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens. Elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot.

Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results).

In Book II, Chapter 2 of his book 'The Spirit of Laws', Montesquieu states that in the case of elections in either a republic or a democracy, voters alternate between being the rulers of the country and being the subjects of the government. By the act of voting, the people operate in a sovereign (or ruling) capacity, acting as "masters" to select their government's "servants."

i think that electoral collage is kinda pointless in my point of view.Just figure your pretty much wasting you time giving your opinion when in the end it doesn't really matter i dont know much but that seems like a waste of time.

i think obama will be that next president of the united states. He is a brilliant leader and will take this country really far and in the right direction, unlike mccain that will lead us into the ground! Everyone needs to quite being so immature about this. ITs not a place to talk crap its a place to blog!

I think that we should keep the popular vote to elect the new President. Everybody needs to be able to voice their own opinion, and with the Electoral College, you can’t really do that. The College votes come from the state, but the popular vote is so diversely spread out over the state that not everyone would be happy.

From what I hear, the president is a pretty important guy. Not important enough to make all that much of a dramatic change in out nation, since in today’s times he wouldn’t be able to try to pull a fast one on the country without someone catching on before hand. So I believe that the president elected should be determined by popular vote. When I reach the age were I care more about who really wins, and I can actually vote myself my opinion might change some. But from what I can tell that makes the most sense. Say you’re having a sleepover. Out of 20 people, 15 want cheese and 5 want sardine. The proper thing to do is order cheese. Just like the pizza, I believe that the popular vote is how we should elect our next United States President.

When all the votes are turned in on October 11th this is the official voting. It should stay like this so that way every vote counts. We are the people who live in this nation so that means all our votes should count. Everyone has their own opinion that should be heard.

I think that the popular vote should determine who is the President becasue that way everyone can have a vote and everyone matters.

I think the we should go with popular vote because then it will be whoever has the most votes will go so then it will be the peoples president because it should be the people that get to vote for the president not the electoral college

i think the popular vote should deffinently choose the president. Its the only way for everyones vote to truely matter.

Anonymous said...

I think that we should go by the popular vote because then the people would actually be heard. With the electoral votes the party that wins is really the only people that get heard. With a state that is really different through out it the smaller part of the state wont get what they want.

I think the popular vote should count. That is the reason why we hold elections isn't it?

I think that the president should be elected by popular vote. Because he is working with the people. or for the people. His choices will affect us. So we should be able to elect the president by popularity.

I think that the president should be elected by popular vote instead of the Electoral College because sometimes our representatives do not listen to the people they are there for. A lot of the times they go off of their own beliefs and not those of the people they are representing. The people vote so why should our votes not count?

I dont really know who should do it...I think mabey popular vote should elect it. I think its the closest thing to fair...

i feel that obama should win cause hes younger and will go for what the people want more and the fact that he will be the first black pres is cool i think and makaine is to old and will die in a couple mounths probly...

I can see both point of views between the Electoral College and popular votes. I like the popular vote because it enables us to directly vote for the presidential candidate that we want in office. A good example on why I like this vote is in the article that I just read. Al Gore won the popular vote in the 2000 elections but he lost the actual election because of the Electoral College vote. Even though I like the popular vote I am still in favor of the Electoral College vote because it allows the smaller states to have a say in the presidential election. Another reason I prefer the Electoral College vote is because it is what the United States started with so since it’s in the constitution I feel that we should keep it that way. Just because it has been working for us all these years so I don’t think that we should change to something that we aren’t sure will be as effective as the Electoral College vote is.

The problem with the government is that they think they can run everything. Everyone has a different opinion and every ones vote should count. Even the little guys but of course they have to be eighteen to vote, for their vote to count. So should the vote be electoral or popular , I think it should be popular.

I should elect the president!!!!!

I believe that the Popular Vote system should be the one that decide who is the President. The first reason is why I feel this way is because that is who the majority of the U.S wants to be the President. Just like in middle school or high school elections the person with the most votes wins. I think that the President with the most votes is the one who will lead our nation better because he knows the nation is backing him. This system will keep both parties happy.

I think that the popular vote is a lot more accurate than the Electoral College. The popular vote makes it so that each and every vote counts. I also think that if there was a popular vote I think that more people would vote. Also I believe that we should have a popular vote so that every ones vote matters. And it would be better if the president got chosen by a lot of people not by only a few people.

Christina I totally agree with your opinion that the national elections should be by popular vote, not electoral. I believe this because doing a national vote gives everyone a chance to make their voice be heard. I also believe this becaue the president serves a term for a full four year term. The nationa has to deal with that. By electing the president through popular by popular vote the nation knows that they at least had a say in matters. If the president were elected through the electoral vote it would end up in everyone thinking that their voice wasn’t heard after they changed their minds about who they wanted to be president and it woould end up being the State Representitives fault. I believe the way that our voting process is good the way it is.
